Edinburgh, Scotland's capital is the gateway to the Scottish Highlands. Leaving the capital behind, before we realised it, our van was already twisting its way up mountain roads into the heart of Scotland. Greenery abounds here in summer; there was plenty of quietness too; so, don't expect bustling cities packed with people and skyscrapers ala Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. Expect wet, cold weather, lochs and Glens; that is, lakes or sea inlets and valleys which are long and bounded by gently sloped concave sides. Most probably, your guide would fill you in about the spectacular National Parks, the Trossachs & the Cairngorms but they might all look the same to uninitiated eyes like ours, all green and serene. Not to be fooled though, Glencoe for example was the site of a masaccre in the past when members and associates of Clan MacDonald were killed by government forces for not being prompt in pledging allegiance to the new monarchs, William III of England and II of Scotland and Mary II during the Jacobite uprising of 1689-92. I remember Glencoe not just for the masaccre there but a friend had kept on asking our guide about The Three Sisters throughout the journey.
