Summer Holiday: More on Staffa

It was a fine day when we were at Staffa. That was very fortunate because where we disembarked somewhere north of Am Buachaille is only possible in calm condition. While I missed witnessing the puffins nest on the island, I was fortunate enough to be able to explore Fingal's Cave, the sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The cave which is formed entirely from hexagonally jointed basalt column is a natural wonder; and Scots novelist Sir Walter Scott had described Fingal's Cave, in his own words, as one of the most extraordinary places I ever beheld. It exceeded, in my mind, every description I had heard of it… composed entirely of basaltic pillars as high as the roof of a cathedral, and running deep into the rock, eternally swept by a deep and swelling sea, and paved, as it were, with ruddy marble, baffles all description...
