I don't remember seeing many people when we first arrived at Yi Ren Gu Zhen or the Ancient Town of the Yi People. The place didn't look very ancient too; not like the ancient towns of Dali or Lijiang; both also in Kunming; and which I was very fortunate to have visited many years back. The canal here definitely looked newly constructed and the bridge that ran across it too; but nevermind; after our dinner, I noticed the crowds trickling in and there was a little something for everyone. One could pay to go to the theater to watch a performance featuring local traditional Yi music, go for free street performances in a big square there or just go somewhere to eat or shop for clothes, scarves or other souvenirs. It was lovely at night and when we went back, we got to celebrate a friend's birthday. Since someone found out that my birthday was in the same month, I got to share the cake too. We also met a fellow countryman who was working in Kunming and he suggested that we visited either Dali or Lijiang. We had other plans of course. We were going to visit a dinosaur museum in Lufeng...
