Sulawesi Surprise!: Views of Makassar Strait

Makassar Strait is between the islands of Borneo and Sulawesi. I suppose we didn't have to travel far to view it. It is right there at our hotel door step and as we left Makassar for the journey north, we already had a vintage view of this strait which has been said to be a common shipping route for ocean going ships especially those which are too too big to fit through the Straits of Malacca. I could also imagine this place to be rife with activities once in World War II when the Battle of Makassar Strait occured. An American-British-Dutch-Austrialian (ABDA) fleet, under Rear Admiral Karel Doorman was intercepting a Japanese invasion convoy then but had to retreat when attacked by 36 Mitsubishi G4M and 24 Mitsubishi G3M. It does not matter that the battle had occurred in the Bali Sea which is closer to the Kangean Islands than to Makassar - When you are in a foreign land, sometimes, your imagination goes wild...8

I would like to live in oe of such houses. Ower the water. Well, any water would be good for me. Even a source under the windows...
By the way, how much -approximatelly- could cost (in US dollars) such a house? Not very big. Who knows maybe it's possible to buy it?

those house look good because they are for tourists. The one for normal people may be old and dilapidated. anyway, these houses on stilts can be found in Brunei and Malaysia too in some fishing villages. It is nice to stay for a while there but I don't know about forever. Near to my place, a friend of mine who lives in such house said his costs just RM 10, 000 plus and that comes to around US400. That's very cheap, don't you think?

Cheap for Europe. Here a flat in a town costs about euro 150 000 and higher. And -as for me- that flats have bad plans. Not far from us in the village a flat of 100 m costs about euro 300 000 -and it's gratis if you see the price of a similar flat in Milan (where there is job, and both wife and husband can work).

The problem is how much costs the life. Here you need at least euro 1500 for 2 persons to survive. And if you have to pay the rent (about euro 1000) it is not enough. A worker-if he is so fortunate to have a job- after 30 years of job has about 1300/month.

Life is hard everwhere. People here are not earnng Euro and so, things that seem cheap to European are actually expensive. The house I mentioned should be cheap even to local standard. There are more expensive homes elsewhere and in better location.

That is what I wanted to say. The life is hard for honest persons everywhere. I write for Americans and know that they and Germans too (those we think more rich) look for the places aboard to retire because it's very difficult to survive with the money they earn in own country. The same in Italy.

With American dollars or Euros, it is possible to make here and other parts of Asia a second home; but the people over here can't go there. It would be very very expensive
