Kampung Slim is a very small village and like many small villages in Malaysia, there is a little Chinese community here who live in what appeared to be a new village. New Villages(Chinese: 华人新村) are not new of course, having been created in the mid-50s when the rule of the British in the then British Malaya was waning. Devised by British General Sir Harold Briggs under the Briggs Plan, New Villages those days were partially fortified and supervised round the clock by police to stem the flow of food and information from the villagers to the communists during the Malayan Emergency. Those were the good old days. Presently, Ah Heng has rented a house there in the little new village in Kampung Slim and it was kind of quaint putting up a night there. Exploring the compound, I was surprised to find chickens huddled together in cages in the neighbour's backyard. So, people still keep chickens. Probably in Kampung Slim,one is unable to buy a ready slaughtered and cleaned chicken in the market. Talking about surprises, that night, Ah Heng took me to Tanjung Malim where I was being pleasantly surprised with a treat of yong tau fu, which by the way, is a Chinese soup dish with Hakka origins. In Malaysia, Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, boasts an eating shop which serves superb yong tau fu but this is one in Tanjung Malim probably could hold a candle to the one in the capital. Hey -We were not in Bali yet but already we were having fun!
