Ayutthaya is about 80 km north of Bangkok and it is possible to hire a van for a day trip if you are not willing to spend a night there. You don't have to start very early in the morning, eight to nine would be fine and you can come back in the evening to Bangkok for dinner if you like. As for my friends and I, we had wanted to spend two to three days there. Having landed on Don Muang Airport late at night, we checked into nearby Thanapa Mansion. I remember the place to be off the main road, very dark and deserted at night but there were complaints of barking dogs; if you care to read reviews in the Net. Good thing though it did not cost a bomb.
