River above a River

River above a river, that's what Sungai Atas Sungai means. A river above a river is possible if a canal is built to direct the water from a river so that it flows above another river. After visiting the giant well in Redang Panjang, Ijok, my friends and I immediately made our way, in the opposite direction, along the narrow, bumpy mud road which we had used earlier, crossed a tarred road and travelled a short distance on yet another narrow, untarred road before coming to a sturdy bridge built by the British in 1936. That marks the place where a canal carrying the water from Sungai Ijok Ijok River flows over Sungai Redang Panjang Redang Panjang River. While the water flows to the giant well and continues on to Tasik Merah Merah Lake, you may  be left wondering why wasn't the water channeled from Sungai Redang Panjang itself. Then, of course you'd also be like us, filled with wonder to see for the first time what the locals called Sungai Atas Sungai River above a river. Probably, such situation is just one of a kind, not just in Malaysia but the whole world!                                       2
