One of the fondest memories when visiting Ayutthaya was asking for directions to Ayutthaya Historical Park from a local man, a lecturer who spoke little English and who ended up driving us there instead in his pick up truck. Ayutthaya was founded by King Ramathibodi I in 1351 and thirty-five kings had been known to rule the kingdom. Ayutthaya Historical Park covers the ruins of the old city of Ayutthaya and only some parts were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and they include Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, Wat Phra Ram, and Wiharn Phra Mongkhon Bopit. I suppose our kind Samaritan dropped us at the entrance to Wat Phra Sri Sanphet. The wat boasts some distinctive pagodas and a number of smaller chedis which were constructed to hold the remains of kings and other members of royalty. I suppose Wat Phra Sri Sanphet is very near Wat Phra Ram which was built in 1912 B.E. by King Ramesua at the cremation site for his father, King Uthong.
