Loving Lombok: At Taman Narmada

When in Lombok, someone mentioned Mount Rinjani . That's an active volcano with a lake known as Segara Anak or Anak Laut Child of the Sea adjacent to it. Standing at 3,726-meter high, it's the second highest volcano in Indonesia. Apparently, someone's friend had climbed the mountain and it was not an easy feat; not even for a king; King Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Karang Asem had then in 1727 constructed a replica of the summit and the lake so that he could perform his pilgrimage to the mountain and worship the Hindu god, Lord Shiva
at his fancy. Today, Taman Narmada as the place is called is easily accessible. At about 11 kilometres away to the east of Mataram, tourists can conveniently take a minivan called a bemo or walk to the garden. While there, some pilgrims from Java came to pray in a small Hindu temple there. A priestess was summoned and she came with the keys to open the door.  There was a natural spring inside, the Fountain of Youth; the water when drunk has the power to prolong life and cure diseases. My friends and I paid some fees to join the pilgrims in their prayers and drank from the the Fountain of Youth...
