Visiting Vietnam: A Whale Temple

In Van Thuy Tu Temple, there is a 22 meter whale skeleton on display. Van Thuy Tu Temple, in Phan Thiết, Vietnam was built in 1762 and bearing Chinese characters, I've thought it was a Chinese temple. The fishing community in the area believe whales protect fisherman from bad weather and other dangers at sea. Fishermen don't hunt them. Dead whales found at the beach are chopped up and buried and their bones dug after three years only to be brought to this temple. Van Thuy Tu Temple is dedicated to whale worship and is regarded the largest and oldest whale temple in Vietnam. Reportedly, there are over 100 whale skeletons on display too; besides fishing boats, and other artefacts from the Nguyen Dynasty such as written decrees by kings, terracotta statues, incense table, lacquered boards, antique bronze bell but since the guide didn't point that out, I suppose I was more focussed on the 22 meter whale skeleton.
