Java Jamboree: Mount Bromo: Final Chapter

A story goes that the 15th century Majapahit princess Roro Anteng and her husband Joko Seger were childless and they climbed Mount Bromo to pray to the gods for a child. Their wish was granted and they had 25 children but the last child, Kesuma, was to be sacrificed to the gods. The princess broke her promise and the gods started to threaten with fire and brimstone. The princess relented and the child was thrown into the crater of Mount Bromo. Just imagine, falling into this seemingly bottomless pit. It was not even comfortable standing on the brim of the crater or walking there, along a narrow path with railings, breathing in air that smacked of sulphur. Looking into the crater, one would also see thick white smoke spinning out; there was none of the red molten lava seen in Hollywood movies. It was really an out of the world experience!
