Summer Holiday: A Castle on an Island

It was dark and gloomy when we reached here, the Eilean Donan Castle on the little tidal island, Eilean Donan where the three sea lochs; Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands of Scotland meet. The island bears the name of an Irish saint, Donnán of Eigg who purportedly built a church here. Of course, that was a long time ago, in the 6th or 7th century and no remains of the church remain. The castle, a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan MacRae, was only founded in the thirteenth century, and even then, had seen periods of ruin and repair. In 1719, when the Mackenzies got  involved in the Jacobite rebellions, government ships were sent to destroy it. Reconstruction in the twentieth-century by Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap included the  construction of a new arched bridge to give the castle an easier access. We didn't go into the castle however; just posed for a picture outside just like in the 1988 Bollywood movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai where the castle was used as a backdrop to a dance scene.
