Summer Holiday: No Sight of Nessie

During the days when people read books, newspapers and magazines and there was no internet to talk of;  Nessie had already made itself a name. Since 1933, the world had heard that this large, long-necked  creature with humps; otherwise known as Loch Ness monster, lived in the deep, dark water of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Standing at 16 metres above sea level, the freshwater lake extends for about 37 kilometres southwest of Inverness and  is one of a series of interconnected bodies of water in Scotland. Besides being the largest body of water in the Great Glen, Loch Ness boasts to have more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. I remember making a short stop at Fort William before continuing our journey to Fort Augustus. Then, we were walking along the Caledonian Canal to view the lake. Other than a group of Chinese tourists travelling in a rented car, we were about the only one to stand at the shore of Loch Ness, viewing its murky and calm water. Nessie was nowhere in sight...
