The Western Mountains or Western Hills 西山 Xi Shan , 12 km to the west of Kunming are a protected scenic mountain area often called Western Hills Forest Reserve 西山森林公园 . Besides beautiful natural formation like spectacular steep cliffs and giant firs and pines to feast your eyes on, there are ancient temples and grottoes like the Huating Temple and the Longmen Grottoes to explore. Visitors would have to buy a ticket to enter though; and since some of us have visited the places before, there was no urgency to visit them again and we wandered and had fun outside the entrance instead.
