A well-lit, intricately carved stone set with a large marble plaque attracted our attention when we were walking the streets of Kuta. A close look at the plaque revealed names and nationalities of people who had been killed unceremoniously by Jemaah Islamiah (JI) terrorists. It was a memorial we had bumped into. Bali had been the target of Muslim terrorists not just once, but twice. The 2002 Bali bombings on 12 October which claimed 202 lives and injured 240 people was said to be the deadliest act of terrorism in Indonesia’s history. The 2005 Bali bombings merely killed 20 and injured more than a hundred people. The memorial which was on the site of the destroyed Paddy's Pub on Legian Street, was dedicated to the 2002 bombings. Sometimes the human race ought to be reminded of a not so beautiful past... A memorial in Kuta, Bali...
